When leaders from Berkeley and Dorchester counties come together, they find common solutions to issues affecting both regions. Recently, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce and Berkeley Chamber of Commerce hosted a joint planning summit. Leaders from both counties participated in discussions led by the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG), Home Telecom and the Department of Environmental Services. A key topic that emerged from the discussions was the shared concern over well and septic systems, along with stormwater management.
The timing of the summit was crucial, as both counties had recently experienced record rainfall due to Tropical Storm Debby. With rapid growth in both regions, county leaders and developers have expressed increasing concerns about effective stormwater management. During the summit, the Department of Environmental Services provided updates on its newly restructured department, while county leaders shared best practices for addressing the growing needs of their communities.
The Department of Environmental Services also shared valuable resources for homeowners with septic systems. A septic system consists of a tank and a drain field, designed to treat and dispose of domestic wastewater through natural processes. When properly installed and maintained, a septic system can render wastewater safe for the environment. However, South Carolina faces challenges, as some septic systems fail due to poor maintenance. Homeowners can learn more about how their septic systems work and how to care for them by visiting the Department of Environmental Services’ Homeowner Resources website.
With the region’s rapid growth, it is essential to focus on sustainable solutions for homeowners and municipalities alike. In addition to the insights shared by the Department of Environmental Services, Home Telecom provided updates on their efforts to expand broadband access to all county residents. The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce also highlighted the recent opening of its third resource hub, which aims to increase access to services for all residents, particularly in rural communities. For more information about the resource hub, visit the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce website.
By fostering collaboration and sharing resources, leaders from both Berkeley and Dorchester counties are working to address the region’s challenges and ensure a sustainable future for their communities.
