How a Multi-Billion Dollar Industry Shapes the Economic Future of the Charleston Region

Healthcare is far more than a service people turn to in moments of need, it is a cornerstone of South Carolina’s economy and a driver of growth across the Charleston region. The reach of our hospitals and health systems extends into nearly every corner of our community, creating jobs, generating business for local suppliers and supporting industries from construction to technology.

According to the South Carolina Hospital Association, hospitals alone generate more than $36.7 billion in total economic impact statewide and support over 203,000 jobs. For every dollar spent by a hospital, an additional $0.90 circulates through the economy, meaning each dollar generates nearly double its value in impact. South Carolina ranks 10th in healthcare quality and 13th in hospital quality nationwide (U.S. News & World Report, 2024), underscoring the role of our healthcare infrastructure in supporting both health outcomes and economic strength.

A Diverse Healthcare Network

The Charleston region is home to four major healthcare systems, MUSC, Roper St. Francis Healthcare, Novant Health and Trident Health, each bringing unique strengths and approaches to addressing the health needs of our growing community. Together, they not only deliver essential care but also ensure our economy benefits from a variety of investments, innovations and workforce opportunities.

Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)

MUSC’s statewide economic impact reaches $10.1 billion annually, supporting more than 52,000 jobs. In the Charleston Tri-county region alone, MUSC generates $7.5 billion in impact and sustains nearly 38,380 jobs. Its research, education and clinical care combine to create an employment multiplier. Every 10 MUSC jobs lead to 12 more jobs elsewhere in the state, amplifying its influence well beyond the medical campus.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare

Roper St. Francis is investing in the future with one of the most advanced hospital construction projects in the South. Its new North Charleston campus is projected to generate $2.5 billion in economic impact and create 3,600 jobs. This investment reflects the system’s commitment to providing care in a rapidly growing part of our region while contributing to job creation and local business activity.

Novant Health

Novant Health’s South Carolina operations contributed $1.2 billion in total economic impact in 2024, supporting 4,923 jobs. In the Charleston region, its activities generate 2,203 jobs and $540 million in output, along with more than $100 million in federal, state and local tax revenues. These contributions strengthen the economic fabric of our communities while ensuring access to a broad range of care options.

Trident Health

Marking its 50th year, Trident Health remains a major economic and healthcare presence, employing 3,588 colleagues and caring for over 367,000 patients annually. In 2024 alone, it invested $335.6 million in salaries, $118 million in capital improvements and $55 million in charity care. Its network of hospitals, specialty centers and emergency facilities ensures care reaches residents across the region.

More Than Medicine

The combined impact of these systems demonstrates the importance of a strong, diversified healthcare sector. Each organization plays a distinct role, whether through academic medicine, expanding access in growing communities, integrating regional networks or delivering high-volume emergency and specialty care. This variety ensures that the Charleston region’s healthcare infrastructure is resilient, adaptable and capable of meeting the needs of a population that is both growing and evolving.

For the business community, these systems represent significant partners in regional prosperity. Their investments fuel job growth, increase consumer spending and spark development in supporting industries. When healthcare thrives, the ripple effects benefit every sector.
