The Advocates: South Carolina Military Leaders Share Key Concerns at Governor’s Briefing

South Carolina’s military presence plays a critical role in both our nation’s defense and the state’s economy. Annually, the Commanders Brief to the Governor ensures that the voices of our military leaders are heard at the highest levels of state government.

On October 2, I attended the briefing where Governor Henry McMaster and South Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs (SCDVA) Secretary Todd McCaffrey received direct updates from commanders of South Carolina’s eight military installations, on their accomplishments and the pressing issues facing service members, their families and base operations.

For the Charleston region, home to Joint Base Charleston and the Charleston Coast Guard Base, the conversations carried particular weight. Concerns around housing, childcare and base infrastructure growth are deeply tied to the ability of these installations to sustain operations and support military families. The Commanders Brief provides a vital platform for aligning state leadership with the needs of our installations, ensuring that South Carolina continues to be a strong partner to those who serve.

The discussions highlighted several shared challenges across South Carolina’s installations. Three themes in particular stood out:

Infrastructure Growth and Funding

There is a pressing need for infrastructure support, such as the addition of another operational wing at Shaw Air Force Base and the expansion of the Charleston Coast Guard Base, which will include ten new capital ships. Fort Jackson is also working on projects to enhance training capacity.

Housing Challenges

Housing remains a critical issue, with approximately 70% of personnel at Joint Base Charleston living off-base. The growth of military bases across South Carolina has intensified pressure on the local real estate market.

Childcare Issues

Childcare is a significant concern for military families, impacting spouse employment. Joint Base Charleston has implemented the Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood Plus program, successfully identifying 21 childcare providers in the Lowcountry to help alleviate this burden.

By communicating these issues directly to state leadership, the Commanders Brief strengthens the partnership between South Carolina and its military community. The insights shared will help shape policies and investments that safeguard our installations, support military families and ensure the Charleston region continues to thrive as a critical hub for national defense.
